Got this for $80 on an amazon flash deal. Great phone, offline GPS, good processor speed for WP8. Unlock codes on ebay for ~$3 to get it to work on other carriers like T-mobile. Cheaper than buying the lumia 521.
Only con for me is the lack of some apps. But it should get better as it gets older since Windows is still relatively new. Love their interface though. Live tiles is pretty good

Not cheaper than T-Mobile Nokia 521. There was a deal from HSN 2 months ago for Nokia 521 $80 with case and car charger.

I just sold my iPhone 5 for $550 and picked up a lumia 520 for $80 to see if I had fallen into the "more money than brains" trap.
The Lumia's screen is not as good at the ip5's, but certainly passable. The lumia 520 has 233 PPI, which is just under the iPad 4's ppi of 256, and WAYYY better than the iPhone 3gs's 163 ppi (keep in mind the iphone 3gs was for sale for several hundred dollars up to a year ago).
Having used both Android and iOS for the past few years (had an iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S, and 5 and have N7), I find Windows Phone 8 to be great. It is smooth, intuitive, and never crashes. Every app I use is on there, including google music, evernote, drop box, public transit apps, etc. The build quality is excellent. The contacts management is the best.
It comes with a built in case. If the factory one gets damaged you can find a oem replacement on ebay for $7.
Oh yeah - and it only cost me $80.

I really liked this phone. for 85 bucks you can't beat the price at all. Several pet peeves about this that made me return it.
- Even though users are reporting offline maps, I was unable to save maps to my MicroSD card. It only allowed me to save it to the internal storage which isn't much at all once you start installing apps and what not.
- Camera is crap. Not crap compared to an Iphone or crap compared to a high end device. I mean crap in general. With Nokia being so good with their smartphone camera optics they could've at least put in a budget camera and still have it perform well. If what you're taking a picture of isn't in 100% bright and illuminated area it will look grainy and crappy. It was about PM sun was going down but it was still fairly bright in my house with all the windows open, I tried snapping a pic and it looks like it was night time. Basically camera phones from two years ago perform better than this.

Guess, no WP 8 amber updates for ATT Lumias yet...
T - Mobile Lumias got Amber update few weeks ago
Using this for past few months, very glad..
I had androids through out the past several years - HTC, Nexus, S3 and nothing beats my 521 for my usage and purpose..

Most 520s from AT&T should come with GDR2 and amber. If the phone has the double-tap-to-wake function, then amber is already preloaded.
Note that Nokia did not enable the DTTW function on 521s with amber.

I had the Tmobile version of this phone the 521, and I have to say it had the best gps hardware of any phone Ive owned. It would lock on very fast, even in buildings that other phones couldnt get a lock in.
I ended up going back to Android though since I miss being able to customize and all the apps it offers.

The 521 is a little larger for some reason, but has the same screen size. It has a white back, and isn't compatible with the optional colored backs of the 520. Other than that, and the T-Mobile HSPA+ compatibility, it's exactly the same.
I have amber but double tap to wake isn't working.[/QUOTE]
Current AT&T 520s should come preloaded with amber and DDTW. This function is located under settings/system/display+touch/touch. Simply enable the check box to double-tap-to-wake.
The 521 has identical hardware, but Nokia has decided not to include the DTTW function with the amber update. The WiFi calling feature on the 521 is only supported by T Mobile. I couldn't get my WiFi calling to work until I installed GDR2 and amber via software update.
The 520 should work well in Europe. I'd go with the AT&T 520 because it is cheaper than the 521. 521 has a camera light sensor which may provide a minor improvement in picture quality under low-light. The WiFi calling is supported by T Mobile only.

i got the 521 for $80 through HSN. Also got the 520 for $80 at a Windows store. Would highly recommend this. Great screen, decent OS, and best of all- great offline GPS funcationality. Only downside is the lack of apps compared to iOs and Andriod. Also, some intuitive functions such as call history aren't even implemented.
See this for list of features that people have been wanting prior to GDR2 but Microsoft still hasn't implemented yet: http://windowsphone.us ervoice.com...u ggestions
Would recommend 520 over 521 for easy unlock though both are 99.99%similar. 521 unlocks are impossible to get except through official tmobile channel- they won't provide one unless you are current or former customer

Just a minor warning - free shipping does't work in you put ANYTHING in the company line. If you want it shipped to work, put all that address on a single line. Despite asking for it to be changed / refunded, Tiger are refusing saying its already being process. Yet its not even shipped yet! Not great CS so far.
since you are on prepaid plan, I donot think ATT will force you to add data plan. you should be fine.
520 can use wifi to connect to internet.
you can still buy message picture and video packs as usual.
you can also try ATT MVNO such h2o wireless and air voice, they may provide better value for you. both can use ATT phone without unlock since they use AT&T network.

I have a question that needs you guys for help.
I'm using At&t prepaid phone (Samsung Sunburst) with pay by the minute plan and buy texting package once in a while. I have quite low usage of phone - mainly for "emergency" calls. As I'm either at work or at home, I don't really need going onto the internet using the phone. Needless to say, I'm kinda frugal on cell phone bill and don't want to pay over $10 a month for it. But sometimes when we are out we do want to check an address for a restaurant or shop. Since I'm not willing to pay for data plan, I understand that I can't go to internet anytime I want and I have to deal with the inconvenience of surfing the web for free when wifi is available. So my question is: After buying the Nokia 520, can I continue to subscribe to pay by the minute plan without any data plan with AT&T? If I can, then would the phone will be able to connect to internet with wifi provided by a store (pay by minute and no date plan)? If I can, then I still buy message package to send text, picture and video? It appears that AT&T make us to at least subscribe to a $25 monthly plan then add the data plan for any Smartphone. T-Mobile seems more flexible for customers like me, so is Nokia 521 a better choice? I don't mind the difference between 521 and 520 and T-Mobile coverage should be good enough for me. I can deal with the one-time cost of getting a better cell phone but I want to avoid unlocking the phone, blocking data connection, hiding from the phone provider... Simply put, I just want a bit smarter phone so I can call, text and connect to internet when wifi is available at a monthly cost under $10, Is this deal for me? I know I could call AT&T to find out but my experience is a lot of them don't even know the answer and tell me whatever they think. Finding people on internet especially those in the same boat already make me feel a lot more comfortable. Thank you in advance for any input.
Prise, SlickDealsed, Plusly, SlickDealed, and toyphone were all new words that I'll need to add to spell check. The use of the word witch in that context was also something new. That's pretty amazing considering that you only used a total of 6 sentences. Could you explain in more detail please why buying from eBay is different than buying from AT&T? Didn't the guy selling on eBay get his phone from AT&T previously? As for no apps ... did anyone suggest that the Windows Phone Marketplace was as robust as iOS? Does Apple make a phone that I can buy new for $85? The irony in this post was terrific. Windows Phone is amazing for doing core phone activities. Where it falls short is the gaming department. The iPhone is the ultimate toy phone (2 words) as most iPhone users fill up there device with games, music and movies.
Create a contact called "Google" with phone number 46645 (it's GOOGL spelled out on the number pad).
If you don't need the WiFi calling (make calls over the internet if there is no phone signal) feature found on T Mobile network, then 520 is the better buy because it's cheaper. Note that WiFi calling will still use the air minutes. Both phones have essentially the same identical hardware. |
